Repair of the wood structure of a chimney applies to chase-style chimneys, common on the newer homes in Salvador, Bel Aire, and parts of Browns Valley, where a metal flue runs inside a framed and stuccoed box rather than a solid brick stack. When the chase cover rusts or the flashing lifts, water reaches the wood underneath the mortar and stucco, and the framing might have some wood rot before any stain shows on the ceiling. Wood structure chimney repair replaces the rotted studs, sheathing, and top plate, then reseals the chase so the damage does not return. This work is framing and waterproofing, it is not the same as a chimney sweep, and rotted framing cannot simply be painted over.

Mortar chimney repair addresses solid masonry chimneys, which are typical on the older bungalows in Old Town Napa, Napa Abajo, and Alta Heights. Mortar joints on a Napa County chimney generally last 20, 30 years before they crumble; tuckpointing rakes out the failed joints to about 3/4 inch and packs in fresh mortar.
